...and why it’s so important to start from Day One
So, you’ve decided to get a puppy, congratulations! This is such an exciting time. You’ve probably pictured the cuddles, the playfulness, and the adventures to come.
But if you’re already feeling a little overwhelmed, don’t worry, that’s completely normal. There’s so much advice out there, and it often contradicts itself. Add a bit of sleep deprivation into the mix, and it’s easy to feel unsure about where to start or what really matters.
The truth is, the very best thing you can do for your new puppy (and yourself!) is to start training and guiding them from day one. The easiest thing to focus on straight away, reward good choice. See your puppy doing something you love, reward them. You can use food, toys or praise. And remember to reward things, that don’t seem obvious. Your puppy decided to lay down to relax – Love that! – Reward this.
If you’d like to get ahead with your training and guidance, I can highly recommend reading Steve Mann’s Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy and then finding a good puppy class to get signed up to. And I’m not saying that to sell you one of mine (though that would be a lovely bonus!) but because I firmly believe that all puppies and all owners benefit from attending a good puppy class.
How do you spot a good puppy class, I hear you ask? Contact any trainer in your area. If they aren’t happy for you to come and observe a class, then stay clear. You should be able to come to a class, and get a feel for them and how they run things. It should feel right to you before you commit to a long course.
The Crucial First Three Months
The first few months of your puppy’s life are an incredible period of growth and learning — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
From around 8 to 12 weeks, puppies go through their socialisation period, when their brains are rapidly developing and they’re forming opinions about the world. Every new sound, sight, smell, and experience is shaping what they’ll think is safe or scary later on.
Then comes the juvenile stage (roughly 12–16 weeks), when curiosity kicks in. Puppies start testing boundaries, gaining independence, and exploring more confidently. This is the time to introduce gentle structure, consistency, and boundaries — showing them how to navigate the world calmly and safely.
By starting training through these stages, you help your puppy:
- Build confidence around new people, dogs, and environments.
- Learn emotional regulation — how to calm down, settle, and cope with excitement.
- Develop focus and problem-solving skills, so they can think before reacting.
- Strengthen their bond with you through positive, clear communication.
When owners wait until problems arise such as barking, jumping, pulling, or anxiety, they often find themselves trying to unlearn habits rather than guiding the right ones early. But when you start from day one, you’re shaping your puppy’s understanding before confusion or frustration can take root. And wouldn’t it be nice to feel confident that you have the skills to deal with any early signs of those ‘so-called’ problem behaviours?
Benefits of Puppy Training #1
Building Communication and Gaining Understanding
At Nimbus Dogs, we believe training isn’t about control, it’s about communication. It’s how you and your puppy learn to understand one another.
Every time you teach your puppy something new, you’re not just shaping behaviour, you’re building a shared language. You’re helping your dog learn what to expect from you, what’s safe in their world, and how to make good choices. In return, you learn how to read your puppy’s body language, moods, and needs.
This mutual understanding is what creates a calm, confident, happy dog and a relaxed, capable owner.
Training should be about laying the foundations for trust, focus, and resilience, so you both know how to handle life’s challenges together.
Benefits of Puppy Training #2
Training Is About More Than “Commands”
Training isn’t just about teaching a sit, down or a stay cue. It’s about helping them learn how to exist comfortably in your world.
Yes, your puppy will learn to come when called, walk nicely on a lead, and settle when asked but these aren’t just tricks or rules. They’re life skills that help your dog feel safe, capable, and confident in every environment.
Every exercise you do together, from teaching recall to practising calm greetings, builds communication. It teaches your puppy to look to you for guidance, even when things are exciting or new. That’s how real trust and reliability are created and connections are shaped.
Benefits of Puppy Training #3
Preventing Problems Before They Begin
Many owners we meet at Nimbus Dogs come to us later in their dog’s life, after months of “just managing” behaviour. They’ve been avoiding certain situations, walking at quiet hours, or feeling anxious about visitors.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right early guidance, you can prevent these struggles altogether. You can raise a puppy who’s comfortable meeting people, relaxed being left alone, and happy exploring the world with you instead of feeling overwhelmed by it.
Training from day one isn’t just about shaping your dog’s behaviour; it’s about creating a lifestyle that works for both of you.
Our Top 3 Things to Teach Your Puppy Straight Away
If you’re wondering where to start, here are three things every puppy should begin learning from day one:
1. Calmness and Settling
Before you worry about sit or stay, teach your puppy how to relax. Learning to switch off and settle is one of the most valuable life skills a dog can have. Start by rewarding calm moments when your puppy lies down quietly, chews peacefully, or takes a breath after play, calmly walk towards them and deliver a piece of food. A calm dog makes better choices and copes better with the world.
2. Focus on You
One of the most powerful foundations you can build is attention. Reward your puppy whenever they look at you, check in, or respond to their name. These small moments of focus will grow into reliable recall, loose-lead walking, and overall connection.
3. Positive Experiences with the World
Every sound, surface, person, and dog your puppy meets teaches them something. Make those experiences safe, gentle, and positive. Let them observe at their own pace, and pair new experiences with treats or play. Early positive exposure prevents fear and builds lifelong confidence.
Benefits of Puppy Training Classes
There are plenty of puppy classes out there but here at Nimbus Dogs, we do things a little differently.
Our 12-week puppy course is designed to give you time to truly progress, practise, and see real change. We don’t believe in a quick six-week class where you learn something once and hope it sticks. Dogs (and humans!) learn best through consistency, repetition, and support and that’s exactly what our programme is built around.
You’ll get:
- 1 Zoom class to get you started right away, even before you step into the classroom.
- 10 classes in the hall, where you’ll build skills step by step.
- 1 real-world class, held somewhere like a park, pub, or pet shop because training in real life is where it really counts.
-
3 months of ongoing support, including guidance from your trainer and the chance to share wins and struggles with others going through the same journey.
We’re not here to just “tick off” a list of skills, we’re here to help you grow together with your puppy.
Learning Never Stops
Training doesn’t really end, it simply evolves as your dog grows. Every experience your puppy has is teaching them something, whether you’re actively guiding them or not.
You can either be part of that learning, helping your puppy understand the world in a positive way… or they’ll start figuring things out on their own, often in ways you’d rather they didn’t!
By choosing to train intentionally and consistently, you’re giving your dog the tools to make good choices, not just when you’re there to tell them what to do, but throughout their life. That’s what turns training into a lifelong partnership, not a six-week checklist.
Ready to Get Started?
If you’re ready to make the most of these early weeks with your puppy, Nimbus Dogs is here to help. Our puppy course will give you the confidence, knowledge, and community you need to raise a calm, capable companion while actually enjoying the process.
You’ll be supported every step of the way, with a clear plan that grows as your puppy does. Because great training isn’t just about what your dog learns in class; it’s about how you both grow together in real life.
Start today and set your puppy up for a lifetime of trust, understanding, and adventure by your side.
Happy Training,
Lisa // Nimbus Dogs
